Announcing Pastel E-Classes!

I am excited to announce my entry into the ‘virtual learning’ world with my new

PASTEL E-CLASSES. These online classes will allow you to attend my classes and workshops in the comfort and convenience of your own home.

The Benefit of Online Instruction

Everything is online! Classes are conducted on a private blog available only to registered students. I will post lessons, demos, assignments, resource materials and respond to questions and comments through the blog.

Handouts will be available as easy PDF downloads or by email.

Individual feedback on your assignments is included through the use of email and digital photos of your work.

*Work at your own pace at your convenience * No travel expense * Individual attention

What does an E-Class include?

In my real life studio classes I have a focus or theme to each class. I like to combine a lecture or ‘art talk’ with plenty of visuals to illustrate the key concepts. I usually do at least one demo painting. Students then do some warm-up painting exercises before working on the main assignment. I provide one on one guidance at the easel while the students paint. I always have hand-outs to go along with the topic. We usually conclude class with a question & answer/feedback session.

The E-classes will follow the same format as my studio classes but will be adapted to follow online. You will have access to:

  • Transcripts of the lecture (I am working on adding podcast capability)
  • Photos of visuals I present.
  • Handouts available by email or PDF downloads so you can easily print them and keep in a notebook.
  • Demonstration painting will be in the form of step by step photos and slideshows with my explanation of each step.
  • Warm up painting exercises and main assignment explained in detail.
  • Q &A and feedback on your assignments through emailed photos.
  • Comments and conversation with other students through the comment feature on the class blog.
  • Bonus links to resources that support the class topic

How do the E-Classes work?

  • Decide which class or workshop you are interested in. Details for each class will be available here on this blog site. Choose the class you want and you will be directed to a page with more information about the class and a Paypal button.
  • Pay for the class through the Paypal button and you are enrolled. I will then email you the instructions for accessing the class blog as well as the details for asking questions and receiving feedback on your work.

What classes are available as an E-Class?

I am planning to offer three types of classes that will offer something for everyone no matter what your level of painting/pastel experience. These options will become available over the next couple of months beginning with the first pastel Master Class in March.

Pastel Master Class Fee: $25 per class

This is a monthly class suitable for those with some experience with pastels. We

won’t be covering the basics in this class but rather have a theme or focus to each

session which will challenge, inspire and motivate you. It is the perfect jumpstart to

the month. Each class is a self-contained unit so you can choose the topics that

interest you. Topics for Winter/Spring 2010 will include:

  • Painting from memory...improving your observational skills..still life in pastel
  • High-Key painting in pastel
  • Winning Compositions
  • In the Style of the Pennsylvania Impressionists

Each e-class includes lecture notes, demo photos and detailed explanations, handouts, exercises and main assignment with individual feedback on your work as well the opportunity to ask questions about the lesson.

*The first Master Class will be available the first week of March 2010*

Six Week Sessions

Six Week Sessions ...Back to Basics with Pastel and The Landscape in Pastel

For those who prefer the routine of a weekly class, these 6 week sessions are a good option. These classes are suitable for students with any level of painting/pastel experience. Each class lesson will be posted on Sunday and you will have a week to study and work on the assignments. Each week you can email a photo of your assignment for in depth feedback. Classes include lecture notes, photos of my demos along with detailed explanations, handouts by PDF download or by email, exercises and assignment with personal feedback on your work.

The fee for the six week session is $145

Back to Basics will cover the basic principles of painting such as value, color, composition & design as it applies to pastel painting.

***This 6 week session will be starting in mid March 2010*****

The Landscape in Pastel will cover the basics of landscape painting such as composition, aerial perspective, ways to paint trees and other landscape elements as well as covering various pastel techniques for painting the landscape.

*******This 6 week session is scheduled to begin in mid April 2010l***********

Mini-Workshops Online

One of my favorite teaching formats is the mini-workshop. I design each mini-workshop as a self contained unit focusing on a specific painting topic. In my studio, each mini-workshop meets for 4 hours. We have lectures, demos, exercises, and painting time with individual help at the easel. It is a good way to learn the tips and techniques that I like to use to paint various subjects. The online mini-workshops will cover the same information as the studio version complete with demos, handouts, lecture notes and exercises and assignments with individual feedback on your work.

The fee for each mini workshop is $45

I am planning to launch the following mini-workshops starting this Spring:

  • Wildflowers
  • Painting clouds and skies
  • Painting the seasons
  • Marshes
  • Beaches and seashells
